  Guitar Shorty

"Defiant, electric blues with piercing intensity and raw venom that’ll leave your
ears singed" --Chicago Tribune

When David William Kearney was only 17, he joined Walter
Johnson's Florida-based blues band. Because he was a bit vertically challenged,
a club owner started calling him Guitar Shorty. The name stuck,
and the young musician drew the attention of legends including Willie Dixon and
Otis Rush. Ray Charles hired him for his road band, and he performed with B.B.
King, Sam Cooke, T-Bone Walker and Johnny "Clyde" Copeland.

Then,
fate struck in a different way. In the early 1960s, Guitar Shorty married Marisa
Hendrix, the stepsister of Jimi Hendrix, who took a liking to his stepbrother.
Guitar Shorty maintains he influenced the young guitarist; he says he can hear
his licks on "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze."

One
more thing: Guitar Shorty played guitar while standing on his head on "The Gong
Show" in 1978. He won first place that day.

Texas Johnny Boy with Milton Hopkins
Texas Johnny Boy is an eclectic bluesician following the tradition of the bluesmen
that carved the book and the foundation of American Blues Music. Playing diatonic and chromatic harmonica, flute, alto and tenor saxophone, he still considers himself primarlily a vocalist, covering a variety of Texas, Chicago, New Orleans and Delta Blues.
Milton Hopkins, nephew of Lightnin' Hopkins spent 9 years as BB King's rhythm guitar player.  He also paid dues in Little Richard's band, Sam Cooke's band, Johnny Aces' band, Jackie Wilson, and was on the road for years, with Little Willie John.  A genuine legend of Texas  blues guitar!!!

  Mike Zito
Early Show - 8pm!
This is the Dallas Release Party for Mike Zito's new CD "Pearl River" !!!

“Pearl River” is Mike's second release on Electo Groove, and he is joined this time out by a handful of special guests including Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans (Double Trouble), Susan Cowsill, Lynwood Slim and Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone. The result is a rollicking slice of Americana served up with heaping slabs of greasy New Orleans funk, gritty blues and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll.

"Pearl River" is an album that sounds like it was soaked in the Blues, rinsed with
Rock N Roll, and dried with a towel laced with Soul..." ~The Blues Report

“Zito’s voice is so incredibly soulful that it can be placed into that diminutive group of elite male blue-eyed soul/blues singers like Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald and Rod Stewart… A fine guitarist and composer as well, it’s a winning combination of a genuine and complete performer.” ~ Modern Guitars Magazine

  Larry Garner

"Is Larry Garner the best Songwriter in Blues today? Yes, easily."
(West Coast Blues Review)

The Baton Rouge guitarist brings his swamp blues tradition with current
subjects and problems of everyday life to the people all over the world.
For a man who came to the blues relatively late in life from a day job
and family life in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Larry Garner wasted no time
earning a worldwide reputation as one terrific bluesman. Maybe his
roundabout, diverse route is a part of why he brings such freshness of
vision along with a solid all-around grounding as a musician, poet and
storyteller. The combination is certainly paying off.
